Diesel generator canopy door: a clear opening for service

A diesel generator canopy door has to clear the largest part, seal against rain and stay open while a technician works, so compare the opening size, the seal and the stay before you accept an offer.

A diesel generator canopy door has to clear the largest part, seal against rain and stay open while a technician works. Compare the opening size, the seal and the stay against the service list before you accept an offer. Tesla Power sizes the door on that list; send it to the technical desk and we confirm the leaf.

  • Measure the largest part that will ever pass through, not the largest part in the set today.
  • Check the seal against the rain the site actually gets.
  • Ask how the leaf is held open, because a door that drops on a hand ends the job.
  • Look at the threshold, since a door that will not close is a door that stays open.

What size should a diesel generator canopy door be?

The clear opening is set by the largest item that has to pass through it, and that is usually the radiator core or the alternator rather than the engine. Add the lifting gear to the height, because a part that comes out on a chain needs room above it. A door that clears the part by 50 mm is a door that clears it on paper only.

Width is the figure buyers understate. A leaf wide enough for the part still needs room for a hand on each side and for the gasket to sit without being crushed. Measure the part, add 100 mm each side and then check the leaf against the panel. Tesla Power keeps the frame on the drawing so the opening can be checked before the steel is cut.

Which way should the door swing?

A door that swings out needs clear ground in front of the canopy, and a canopy against a wall rarely has it. A door that swings in takes space inside the canopy and can foul the radiator on a small set. Choose the swing from the site rather than from the factory habit, and check the arc on the general arrangement.

The hinge side matters as much as the swing. A hinge on the radiator end puts the leaf in the hot air stream when it is open, and a technician will prop it with the first thing to hand. A hinge on the alternator end keeps the leaf out of the heat. Put the hinge where the work is done rather than where the panel is easiest to fold.

What seals the door against rain?

An EPDM gasket on the frame and a drip edge above the opening keep most of the water out. A gasket that is compressed to half its thickness seals and a gasket that is crushed flat does not. Set the gap between the leaf and the frame from the gasket rather than from the sheet metal tolerance, because a door that closes on steel leaks at the corner.

A canopy in driving rain also takes water through the louvre, and that water lands on the door seal from the inside. A sill with a drain keeps the bottom gasket out of standing water. Ask for the sill height and check it against the kerb the canopy sits on, because 50 mm is a common figure and a kerb that falls the wrong way cancels it. A door with no sill is a door with a wet gasket every season. Tesla Power puts the sill in the panel drawing rather than in the notes.

How is the door held open?

A gas strut is the usual answer and it has to be sized for the leaf, not for the canopy. A strut rated for a light leaf on a heavy door lets the door fall once the gas leaks, and it leaks within a few years on a hot site. Ask for the strut force in newtons and for the leaf weight it was chosen for.

A prop and a pin is cheaper and it needs a place to land, which many canopies do not have. A removable stay that hooks into a bracket on the frame works on a door that opens to 90 degrees. Whatever the arrangement, the leaf must hold without a hand while a technician reaches in. Tesla Power Equipment fits a strut on every leaf above 25 kg.

What does the door do to the noise figure?

A door is the weakest part of a canopy for noise, because the seal is a line rather than a panel and the leaf is thinner than the wall. A door that leaks at the corner turns a quiet canopy into an average one. On a 400kW set at 80% load the engine runs at 320kW: 400kW x 80% = 320kW, and that is the noise the leaf has to hold in.

The fix is a double gasket and a leaf with the same lining as the panel. A leaf of 1.5 mm steel with no lining radiates the noise the wall absorbs, and the quoted canopy figure is measured with the doors shut. Ask whether the door carries the lining through and whether the gasket is single or double. Yangzhou Tesla Power lines the leaf on the acoustic build and leaves it bare on a standard canopy.

Which lock suits an unattended site?

A quarter turn latch with a padlock eye is enough for a site with a fence, and a flush lock with a key is better on a street. The lock has to be reachable from the ground without a ladder, because a technician who needs a ladder to open the door will leave it open. Set the handle height from the plinth rather than from the canopy base.

Two latches on a leaf wider than a metre stop the door from racking when it is pulled. One central latch on a wide leaf lets the corners lift and the gasket lose contact at the top. Ask for the latch positions on the drawing and check them against the leaf width. A wide leaf with one latch is a leaf that rattles in wind. Tesla Power fits two latches on any leaf above a metre and marks the positions on the drawing.

What does the offer need to state?

The offer should give the clear opening in millimetres, the leaf thickness, the gasket type, the hinge side, the stay force and the lock. Six items on one line let a buyer check the door against the service list without opening a drawing. Ask for the clear opening rather than the frame size, because the two differ by the gasket and the rebate.

The wording on the offer matters too. Chinese diesel generator canopy suppliers often quote a door as part of an enclosure with no opening figure at all, and a diesel generator canopy door manufacturers page can show a leaf the factory does not press. Ask for diesel generator canopy door for a service bay, diesel generator canopy for the radiator end and diesel generator in a coastal yard as three separate cases. Tesla Power prints the opening on the general arrangement.

What does the handover file record?

The file carries the clear opening, the leaf weight, the gasket type, the stay force and the lock key number. One page covers the door when those five items sit under the set serial number. Add the conformity assessment for the canopy door when the enclosure is part of a permit package and the door is on the escape route.

Hand the page to the technician who will hang the leaf rather than to the buyer who placed the order. the Yangzhou factory describes the press that forms the leaf, the commissioning notes lists the canopies with a double gasket, the build range explains how the clear opening is measured, the 500kVA silent set with ATS changeover shows the enclosure the door belongs to, the ISO 8528-1 duty definitions sets the noise basis the canopy figure comes from, and the NFPA 110 maintenance routine covers the enclosure standard behind the build.

Frequently asked questions about diesel generator canopy doors

It can be widened on a bolted canopy and it cannot on a welded one without cutting the frame. Order the opening from the service list rather than from the parts in the set today. A later widening costs a new panel and a repaint, and it costs a week of site time.

A window helps a technician read the controller without opening the door, and it weakens the leaf for noise. A small window in the alternator end is the usual compromise. Ask for the glass thickness and the gasket, because a thin window rattles at full load.

The sill is too low or the canopy sits on a kerb that drains towards the door. A sill with a drain and a kerb that falls away from the opening solve it. Check the kerb level before blaming the gasket, because a gasket in standing water fails in one season.

A leaf of 1.5 mm steel at 1.8 m by 0.8 m weighs about 18 kg before lining, and a lined leaf of the same size passes 25 kg. That is why the stay is a strut rather than a hook on an acoustic build. Ask for the leaf weight rather than guessing from the size.

It should be where the work is, and that is usually the alternator end on a small set and the radiator end on a large one. A door on the radiator end needs a hinge that keeps the leaf out of the hot air. Read the service list and put the door where the filters are.

Every three years on a hot site and every five on a sheltered one, and sooner if the leaf has been slammed. A gasket that has gone hard shows as a water mark inside the panel. Tesla Power ships a spare length of gasket with the canopy so the first replacement is a site job.
